JUNKIE XL- LIVE – Amsterdam, Netherlands
JXL, www.radiojxl.com
Unlike some electronic acts who add little scraps of guitar or rock bands who incorporate simple samples, Amsterdam’s JUNKIE XL, with their phat beats, hip hop flow and monster riffage, he not only blurs the lines of live music and samples – he literally sets the standard for all to follow. Born in the Netherlands, to a musical family, he calls himself a "master alchemist, electronic daredevil and breaker of sound barriers". We know him as the rogue scientist who electrified 'the King' and, via a multi-million dollar ad campaign, introduced Elvis music to the dance generation. Had it not been for Presley's worldwide smash, "A Little Less Conversation", few outside clubland would know of Dutch producer-come-artist Tom Holkenburg. And despite his resume including co-producing Sasha's acclaimed Airdrawndagger album, working with Brazilian rockers Sepultura, and touring with the Prodigy, it'll forever be his skills at making hips gyrate from beyond the grave that will be his milestone.
BT - LIVE – LA, CA
Black Hole Recordings, Kinetic Records, Nettwerk, www.btmusic.com
"BT mounts mesmerizing journeys with his compositions. He is not only a virtuoso programmer, but an extremely gifted musician..." Peter Gabriel speaking to the LA Times. Whether he's crafting perfect pop hooks with *NSYNC, composing intricate scores with eighty-piece orchestras for films like The Fast and the Furious, collaborating with Sting on a track from his forthcoming album, or remixing emotional and languid epics for Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Madonna or Seal, BT consistently balances creative and memorable songwriting, sonic innovation, and the latest technology for a cutting-edge, yet organic sound. BT, born Brian Transeau, grew up outside Washington D.C. where the first evidence of his musical talent manifested as mastery of composers such as Chopin and Bach by age six. A great break in musical direction came when he heard electronic music as an adolescent. BT's mix of epic and classically inspired journeys and beats quickly took on the name Trance, and became one of the most popular and dominant electronic music genres played in clubs from London to Tokyo and New York. "To marry melody, harmony and memorable songwriting with the most bleeding-edge technology possible is my passion. These are the things that excite me."
BAD BOY BILL – Chicago, IL
System, Beatport, Mix Connection, www.badboybill.com
"America's no. 1 Favorite DJ" (BPM Magazine 2003), Bill is a favorite amongst dance-music fans world-wide. He eventually became a household name as a DJ on Chicago’s B96, using his “Bad Boy Bill” audio ID as a way of distinguishing himself from the other DJs on the radio. Spinning the crowd into a dancing frenzy is Bill's motivation. "My DJ style originated with the idea to remix a song live with two copies of the same record and then combine scratching and hip-hop techniques with house grooves." Bill says. "The payoff for me is seeing people dancing and having a great time during my set.”
STEVE SMOOTH – Chicago
Moody Recordings, IHR, Motus Music, www.stevesmooth.com
Born and raised on Chicago's Southside, Steve Smooth first entered the dance music scene starting out at a record store and then a Chicago based independent record label, he became immersed in the house music culture. As a dj, Steve worked to perfect his style of mixing, hitting the Chicago club circuit. This, along with Guest appearances on several college radio stations helped to gain him recognition, eventually leading to a frequent guest spot on the Sunday mix show, "The Street Flava," which aired on Chicago's largest radio station B96 (96.3 FM). But that's not all; in addition to producing, Steve is maintaining an impressive DJ schedule. This past year alone he took his skills as a DJ and sound to over 100 shows including UK, Germany, Spain, Hong Kong, Canada, and North and South Americas as well as his DJ residency at Avalon NYC once a month.
HIVE – San Fran, CA
Violence Recordings, Circle
Celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic, it’s in the unassuming personality of futurist B-boy Hive that drum and bass finds its mightiest bridge between the UK and the US. His tracks have become staples of virtually all of drum and bass’ legends, from Andy C to Goldie, and make regular appearances on Grooverider’s Radio 1 program--on which Hive’s towering “Neo” track spent weeks at number. Tough, propulsive, forged out of both the traditional sampled aesthetic and leading sound designs of contemporary drum and bass, the sound of Hive today bears the imprint of an artist searching for new ways to reinterpret the music by his own lights. Neither a retrospective purist, nor a follower of fashion, Hive’s music, his DJing, and his label strike a steely, inspiring balance, hewing closely to a tight creative vision that has propelled him into the forefront of drum and bass wherever it thrives.
